Overview

With the advancement of digital learning technologies, knowledge sharing for the purpose of education and training has accelerated to a point we have never experienced before. The availability of powerful delivery tools and the intentions and interests for sharing knowledge with greater audiences are the major driving forces behind the growth of Massive Open Online Courses or MOOCs.

While there are many benefits to MOOCs, they currently face several challenges. Design, development, implementation and evaluation of open and distributed learning systems (e.g., MOOCs) require thoughtful analysis and investigation. But most people have no idea how or where to begin. Khan’s E-Learning Framework provides a comprehensive structure for analyzing the issues involving the design, development, implementation and evaluation of e-learning initiatives.

The book is organized into eight major sections aligned with the eight dimensions of Khan’s E-Learning Framework. Based on one of the eight dimensions listed below, each chapter will present a case study illustrating a significant challenge or issue faced by MOOC stakeholders.

Framework Dimensions
  • The pedagogical dimension refers to teaching and learning. This dimension addresses issues concerning content analysis, audience analysis, goal analysis, media analysis, design approach, organization and methods and instructional strategies for MOOC environments. 
  • The technological dimension examines issues of MOOC technology infrastructure, hardware and software, including issues pertaining to capacity, compatibility, security, and scalability.
  • The interface design dimension considers the overall look and feel of the MOOC interface. The Interface design dimension encompasses page and site design, content design, navigation, and usability issues.
  • The evaluation dimension refers to both assessment of learners and evaluation of MOOC environments.
  • The management dimension addresses the maintenance of the MOOC learning environment and its global large-scale distribution.
  • The resource support dimension examines the online support and resources required to foster meaningful learning environments in MOOC courses.
  • The ethical considerations relate to social and political influence, cultural diversity, bias, geographical diversity, learner diversity, information accessibility, etiquette, and the legal issues impacting MOOC design, implementation, and evaluation.
  • The institutional dimension is concerned with issues of administrative affairs, academic affairs and student services related to MOOC learning (i.e., ownership of course content, awarding of academic or transfer credit).

Objective of the Book

Case studies are behind-the-scenes accounts of individuals, processes, programs, or events to bring attention to a particular challenge or problem to identify practical solutions. This book focuses on cases describing issues or challenges experienced by IT and e-learning practitioners, faculty, or students during the design, development and implementation of, or participation in, a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC). Using Khan’s eight-dimensional E-Learning Framework, authors are invited to submit chapter proposals for cases addressing one (or more) dimensions of the framework. Through analysis, reflection, and discussion of illustrative MOOC cases, missteps in the design and delivery of future MOOCs can be minimized or avoided.

Target Audience

This book will be of great interest to designers, developers, and instructional facilitators of Massive Open Online courses, as well as academics and consumers of MOOC content. This book could be used as a textbook or supplementary resource in Educational/ Instructional Technology programs and courses focusing on instructional design for e-learning, distance education trends and issues, and issues in higher education. This book can also be used as a handbook to guide administrators, IT professionals, instructional designers, and faculty in the planning, development, and implementation of successful MOOC initiatives.
